Frequently Asked Questions

  • What kidney problems does a nephrologist treat?

A nephrology specialist in Thrissur can help with chronic kidney disease, sudden changes in kidney function, kidney-related complications of diabetes, and certain problems involving salts and minerals in the blood.

  • When should I see a kidney specialist?

You should visit when your primary care doctor identifies signs of declining kidney health or uncontrolled systemic disease. Your doctor may refer you if blood tests show reduced kidney function, your urine contains unusual amounts of protein, or you're experiencing kidney-related complications.

  • Can kidney disease develop without any symptoms?

Yes, it can develop and progress to advanced stages with no noticeable symptoms. Early kidney disease often goes unnoticed because it may not cause pain or obvious symptoms. This is why kidney function tests are important for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney problems.

  • Can high blood pressure damage my kidneys?

Yes, high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney damage. Over time, uncontrolled blood pressure can damage the small blood vessels in the kidneys. Kidney disease can also worsen blood pressure, so managing both conditions is important.

  • Does having kidney disease mean I will need dialysis?

No. Through dietary changes, proper medication, and regular monitoring, many people manage kidney disease. Dialysis is generally required when kidney functions become severely impaired and when complications cannot be brought down via other treatments.

  • How do doctors check whether my kidneys are working properly?

Doctors primarily rely on two tests to determine kidney health: a blood test and urine test. Blood tests such as creatinine and eGFR help assess kidney function. Urine tests can detect protein or other abnormalities, while an ultrasound may be recommended to examine the kidneys. You should visit a nephrology specialist in Thrissur like Amala to know if your kidney is functioning right.

  • What can I do to keep my kidneys healthy?

You can keep your kidneys healthy and prevent chronic complications by managing your blood pressure, maintaining low sodium diet, staying hydrated, avoiding unnecessary medications, and attending regular check-ups.
