The story of Amala Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) is one of gradual evolution that slowly took form and has now grown into a multidisciplinary medical network of pedagogical, therapeutic, research, and outreach programmes. Its origin was the long-standing vision of some philanthropic leaders who are committed to service, care, and science. The journey began with the establishment of Amala Cancer Hospital under the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) congregation, founded by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and managed by its Devamatha Province. Then the institution underwent continuous growth and advancement, eventually transforming into the AIMS and academic ecosystem we know today.

THE EVOLUTION OF AMALA

What started as a cancer centre in 1978 has now become a leading medical college and multispecialty hospital in Thrissur, Kerala. Over the years, the establishment steadily expanded is clinical infrastructure, research capabilities, and academic capacity, holding itself high as the pioneer in patient-centric and premium healthcare. The Growth of Amala through Its Institutions

The advancement of Amala Institute of Medical Sciences is best understood through the institutions that took shape within its campus in course of time. Each vertical emerged in relation to real healthcare, educational, and social needs, which forms a multidisciplinary ecosystem that aims to make the society healthy.

Cancer Hospital & Cancer Research Centre

The establishment of Amala Cancer Hospital in 1978 began Amala’s journey. The hospital was founded with a singular focus on cancer care with compassion at a time when specialized oncology services were limited in the region. The need for structured inquiry as patient care expanded resulted in the formation of the Cancer Research Centre in 1982. This enabled research-driven oncology practices that laid the foundation for Amala’s clinical expertise that is humane, ethical, and research-backed.

Medical College & Teaching Hospital

Amala Institute of Medical Sciences was formed as a medical college hospital in 2003. Growing demand for trained medical professionals with ethical qualities led to this establishment. The Teaching hospital operations started in 2008, which integrated academic learning directly with patient care. From just doing service delivery, Amala decisively shifted its focus to structured budding of future doctors through real-world clinical exposure, top-notch education and research orientation.

College of Nursing & Nursing School

Skilled nursing is inseparable from quality healthcare. Recognizing this, Amala College of Nursing was established in 2005, alongside the Nursing School. Amala’s patient-care framework was strengthened by these institutions by training nursing professionals who combine clinical competence with angelic care. The compassion- and discipline-infused education method in these institutions aids Amala in reinforcing care standards across departments.

Super Speciality Hospital

Amala evolved into a Super Speciality Hospital in Thrissur as the clinical demands in the region grew more complex. Now it has comprehensive multidisciplinary care and advanced tertiary care services under one roof, reducing the need for patients to seek specialized treatment outside Thrissur. This reflects Amala’s clinical depth, continuity of care, and adaptive nature to the people’s needs.

Ayurvedic Hospital & Research Centre

In 1983, by establishing the Ayurvedic Hospital & Research Centre, Amala took a thoughtful step towards holistic and integrative health care. Ayurveda is treated as a complimentary stream rather than an alternative system at AIMS. Supported by structured practice and research, this unification broadened patient choice and added this ancient form of healing alongside modern medicine.

Homeopathic Hospital & Research Centre

Further expanding Amala’s compassionate care philosophy, the Homeopathic Hospital and Research Centre was initiated in 1989. This vertical was created to support patients seeking long-term wellness and relief from chronic conditions through supervised and guided homeopathic practice. This approach gives patients another pathway within a regulated medical environment to lead a healthy life.

Pharmacy Production Unit

To ensure the availability of quality medicines, Amala established its Pharmacy Production unit in 1990. This unit aligned ethical pharmaceutical practices with affordability. By maintaining control over the sourcing, preparation, and distribution of medicines, Amala bolstered its expertise in every stage of treatment.

Bethanygram – Home for the Aged

As a living expression of Amala’s empathetical nature, Bethanygram was established as a home of lifelong care for senior citizens. This assisted living facility provides emotional security and required medical support for older people. This showcases Amala’s fundamental respect for life at every stage and conveys the message that healthcare doesn’t end with clinical intervention but continues through empathy and responsibility.

AIMS at the Forefront of Medicine, Education & Service

Today AIMS stands as a symbol of sustained growth with principles rooted in compassion, academic excellence, modern clinical services, and community-oriented healthcare. The story doesn’t end here, it keeps on going and growing for all the generations to come.
